How To Live A Complete Life

The Third Metric

The most important thing is to have a clear vision where you are going and to make sure that you take enough time to unplug and recharge – we call it the third metric. If you define success in terms of two metrics – money and power alone it’s like being on a two-legged stool – sooner or later you are going to fall off, including the third metric which starts with well-being, health and goes on to wisdom and giving. It makes a complete life and when you are living a complete life. You’re tapping into your creativity more, you’re more likely to hear what Steve Jobs said, “the whisperings,” you are not caught in words or blindsided, you are a much more effective leader.

It is very interesting if you read eulogies, I love reading eulogies and what they focus on. They don’t focus on one’s resume, they focus on one’s character, on what you bring to the world: your wisdom, your giving, your capacity for joy and laughter and so if we live out our lives like our eulogies we would be happier, healthier and more productive.
