Soul City Cafe is Open for Business

You can't order up a cup of coffee at the Soul City Cafe, Jewel's newest endeavor, but you will be treated to a healthy serving of some of today's freshest undiscovered musicians and artists.

Jewel quote Created as a grassroots community enterprise, Soul City links creative energy with what it means to be human and forms a non-corporate, fun-filled environment where musicians without recording contracts can be heard by the masses. Up-and-coming videographers are engaged to record the shows and poets are given a chance at the mic, too. But that's just the beginning.

Since Soul City's introduction a mere six months ago, it has already showcased at least 12 undiscovered musicians and poets as opening acts for Jewel's North American tour. People everywhere are encouraged to submit their web sites, dedicated to whatever sparks their passion — an artist, a musician, a writer, or even a place to find that perfect cup of coffee — to form an expanding network of sites that have been created by community members.

Soul City's alter ego is totally humanitarian, and focuses on a different group or person each month, highlighting what they've done for their community, be it local or global.

During the month of September, a call to action was issued on behalf of a woman in Nigeria who is slated to be buried up to her waist and stoned to death for having a child out of wedlock. On the site, a petition aimed at reversing this extreme human rights violation was available for those who wanted to sign it.

Soul City Cafe, in the short time it's been in existence, has already provided a huge service. We look to the future with great anticipation for all the good that it's sure to do.
